Below you will find some recommendations that will extend the life of your refrigerator and lower your cost of electricity.  Proper maintenance and care is essential to keep your refrigerator running with maximum efficiency. Refrigerators are one of the most expensive Kitchen Appliances so proper care is important. Please following these maintenance tips so you can extend the life of your refrigerator and avoid very costly repairs.

Always transport your refrigerator upright and not on it’s side.  Setting your refrigerator on its side may cause stress to Freon lines and cause a leak in the sealed system.  It may also cause an obstruction in your refrigerant lines that may be difficult to repair.

To prevent compressor overheating, do not place the refrigerator in any location which restricts airflow to the condenser coils.  Do not place refrigerator on carpet because most condensers coils are mounted under the refrigerator and carpeting retains heat.  This may cause the compressor to overheat.

To avoid heating and overload of electrical supply wiring always plug the refrigerator directly into the wall.  If you need to use an extension chord make sure to use a heavy duty, 3-pronged grounded extensions cord.

Never run the refrigerator in unheated areas where the temperature may get below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.  When the air temperature in an unheated area dips below 60 Fahrenheit the compressor runs less which keeps the temperatures in the refrigerator cold enough for fresh food but it doesn’t keep the freezer cold enough to maintain a proper freeze.  Any temperature below 32 F will cause the defrost water to freeze and block drain passages.

When leaving on vacation or for an extended time discard perishable food and turn off the icemaker.

Do not overload the refrigerator with food.  Air cannot circulate freely to regulate the temperature.

To prevent food odors; cover or wrap all exposed foods in the fresh-food area. Clean up liquid spills and remove bad or spoiled food immediately

Remove the glass shelves and wash with a mild household detergent and rinse with warm water. Clean the door gasket with a mild detergent; rinse and dry. Finish by rubbing a very light coat of Vaseline on the contact surfaces.

By following these tips you can extend the life of your refrigerator.
